April 17, 2010 7PM Castlebay treats an audience to a musical journey through time and across the Atlantic as they interweave timeless songs, spritely dance tunes, and haunting aires inspired by the spirit of our rich Celtic heritage. Elegant vocals are supported with Julia Lane's unique self-taught award-winning Celtic harp style, and Fred Gosbee's expertise on 12-string guitar, violin and woodwinds. The duo delights audiences with engaging rapport blending history, legend and experience into their personable performance style. Both Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee have loved, sung and researched folk music since childhood. Julia Lane's interest in the sources of J.R.R.Tolkien's writing and Celtic music led her to study in Oxford, England. She has won several international folk harp competitions where she was praised for her "innovative arrangements and energetic performance" and it was declared "she really captured the spirit of the music". Fred Gosbee grew up with traditional songs and tunes being played at home in central Maine. He then studied folklore at the University of Maine under Dr. Sandy Ives. He also designs and builds instruments including folk harps. Castlebay has recorded numerous albums and has toured the Eastern U.S., Ireland, England and Scotland playing at festivals, folk clubs, and arts centers, on radio and TV. Their arrangements of traditional music have been reviewed as “delightful, lilting, uplifting, inviting and compelling”. The duo also maintains a commitment to cultural education providing folklore and music programs for schools, museum, libraries and Elderhostels. They regularly exchange music and information with folklorists and musicians from Australia to Ireland. Be sure to visit their website at www.castlebay.net. |
